GOSPEL READING: John 4:5-42
5 So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon.
7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.)[a] 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you[b] say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I am he,[c] the one who is speaking to you.”
27 Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?” 28 Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people, 29 “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah,[d] can he?” 30 They left the city and were on their way to him.
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Surely no one has brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘Four months more, then comes the harvest’? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. 36 The reaper is already receiving[e] wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”
39 Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I have ever done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.”

Жената Му рече: „Господи, Ти нема со што да нацрпиш, а кладенецот е длабок; од каде, пак, имаш вода жива? 12. Зар си Ти поголем од нашиот татко Јакова, кој ни го даде овој кладенец! Исус ѝ одговори и рече: „Секој што пие од оваа вода, пак ќе ожедни; 14. а кој пие од водата, што ќе му ја дадам Јас, нема никогаш да ожедни; таа во него ќе стане извор на вода, што ќе тече во живот вечен.” 15. Жената Му рече: „Господи, дај ми таква вода за да не ожеднувам, ниту да идам овде за полнење!” 16. Исус ѝ рече: „Оди, повикај го мажа си и дојди тука!” 17. Жената одговори и Му рече: „Немам маж.” Исус ѝ рече: „Право кажа дека немаш маж; 18. зашто петмина мажи си имала и овој, што го имаш сега, не ти е маж; право рече.” 19. Жената Му одговори: „Господи, гледам дека си Ти пророк. 20. Нашите татковци се клањаа во оваа планина, а вие велите дека во Ерусалим е местото каде што треба да се клањаме.” 21. Исус ѝ рече: „Жено, верувај Ми дека иде часот, кога ни во оваа планина, ниту во Ерусалим ќе се поклонувате на Отецот. 22. Вие му се клањате на она, што не го знаете; а ние се клањаме на она што го знаеме; +зашто спасението е од Јудејците. 23. Но иде време и дошло веќе, кога вистинските поклоници ќе Му се поклонуваат на Отецот со дух и вистина, зашто Отецот сака такви да бидат оние, кои Му се клањаат. 24. Бог е Дух и оние, што Му се клањаат, треба да се поклонуваат со дух и со вистина.” 25. Жената Му рече: „Знам оти ќе дојде Месија, наречен Христос; кога ќе дојде Он, сè ќе ни каже.” 26. А Исус ѝ рече: „Јас сум, Кој зборувам со тебе.” 27. И тогаш дојдоа учениците Негови и се зачудија дека говореше со жената; но ниеден не Му рече: „Што сакаш?” или „Што зборуваш со неа?” 28. А жената ја остави својата стомна и отиде в град и им рече на луѓето: 29. Дојдете, видете Го човекот, Кој ми кажа сè што сум направила. Да не е Он Христос? 30. Тогаш тие излегоа од градот и тргнаа кон Него. 31. Во тоа време, пак, учениците Го молеа, велејќи: „Рави, јади!” 32. Но Он им рече: „Јас имам храна за јадење, што вие не ја знаете.” 33. Тогаш учениците си проговорија помеѓу себе: „Освен ако Му донел некој да јаде?” 34. А Исус им рече: „Мојата храна е да ја исполнувам волјата на Оној, Кој Ме пратил и да го извршам Неговото дело. 35. И жетварот веќе добива награда и собира плод за вечен живот, та да се радуваат заедно и сејачот и жетварот. 37. Зашто во ова вистинска е поговорката: »Еден сее, а друг жнее.« 38. Јас ве пратив да жнеете, каде што не сте се труделе; други се трудеа, а вие влеговте во нивниот труд.” 39. И мнозина Самарјани од тој град поверуваа во Него по зборовите на жената, која сведочеше: „Ми кажа сè што сум направила.” 40. Кога дојдоа, пак, Самарјаните при Него, Го помолија да остане кај нив. А Исус му рече: „Ако не видите знаци и чудеса, нема да поверувате.” 49. Царскиот човек Му рече: „Господи, дојди додека уште не умрело детето мое!” 50. А Исус му одговори: „Оди си! Твојот син е жив!” И човекот поверува на зборот, што му го кажа Исус и си замина. 51. И веднаш, кога слегуваше, го сретнаа слугите негови и му јавија: „Синот твој е жив!” 52. А тој ги праша за часот кога му станало полесно. Тие му одговорија: „Вчера во седмиот час го остави огнот.” 53. Тогаш таткото разбра дека тоа станало во истиот час, кога Исус му рече: „Твојот син е жив!” И поверува тој и целиот негов дом. 54. Ова, пак второ чудо го изврши Исус, кога пристигна од Јудеја во Галилеја.

Thoughts By St. Theophan the Recluse on the
Sunday of the Samaritan Woman. [John 4:5–42]
The Samaritan’s woman fellow citizens said to her after two days with the Savior in their midst, Now we believe not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world (John 4:42). It happens this way with everyone. At first they are called to the Lord by an external word, or as for many now, simply by birth. But when they taste in practice what it is to live in the Lord, they no longer cleave to the Lord through their external affiliation with Christian society, but through their inner union with Him. It is necessary for all who are born in Christian societies to make this a law for themselves; that is, to not limit themselves to mere external affiliation with the Lord, but to seek to unite with Him inwardly, that they may always bear witness within themselves that they are standing in the truth. Why is this necessary? It is necessary to embody within oneself the truth of Christ. The truth of Christ is a restoration of what is fallen. Thus, put off the old man, which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts, and put on the new man, which is created after God in righteousness and true holiness (cf. Eph. 4:22–24), and you will know within yourself that the Lord Jesus Christ is in truth the Saviour—not only for the world, but also for you.

If we have to correct somebody, let’s do it in a gentle way, just as we hear how our Lord did in the story today!
Has anybody ever corrected you when you did the wrong thing? Maybe your parents or your teacher corrected you when you treated somebody the wrong way, or when you did your schoolwork wrong, or even when you had bad manners at a meal! Sometimes, you might feel like you’re always getting corrected!
In the Gospel reading, we hear about the woman who met Jesus, as she went to get water at the well. She talked with Him. He knew about her, and He knew she had done some wrong things. He knew she didn’t understand the truth about God. So, in a gentle way, Jesus corrected her. He set her on the right way. But how did the woman act? Was she angry with Jesus for correcting her?
Did she tell Him she was still going to do things her way? No! She took Jesus’s correction, and she listened to Him. She began to change her life, and she began to change what she knew about God. She knew that Jesus wanted to help her, so she was thankful for the correction!
Let’s listen to this great example today! When our parents or our priest or our teachers correct us, let’s be ready for it. Let’s listen and remember they are trying to help us. And if we have to correct somebody, let’s do it in a gentle way, just as we hear how our Lord did in the story today!
